Have you ever tried foam rolling for flexibility improvements? It helps a lot. And in this video, not only do I demonstrate how to foam roll 3 of the most common tight areas on the body, but I also explain the many benefits of foam rolling.
The advantage of foam rolling stems from a process called myofascial release, which is the self-release of tension and adhesions in your fascia. You can accomplish this using a foam roller and other muscle rolling devices. Rolling the tights spots, or "knots" as we commonly refer to them, will draw blood to the area to restore life and heal adhesions.
Fascia is a spongy connective tissue that encapsulates all of your skeletal muscle. Due to overuse of muscles and acute traumas, you develop adhesions throughout life that limit your mobility and blood flow. So in addition to improved flexibility and mobility from foam rolling, which you'll notice when stretching, one of the other benefits to myofascial release is the improved blood flow. Blood carries nutrients and oxygen, so in turn this will also improve your recovery time and aerobic capacity.
