My Girl - The Temptations 1964
It has been said that Soul became popular almost by accident. Emerging during the 1950's, and solidifying on its own in 1960's, the music evolved from Gospel, R&B, and jazz and was well suited for dancing and listening. As it became popular in the U.S. and around the world, it also directly influenced rock and roll music. "My Girl", by Mowtown Record's first all male vocal group The Temptations in 1964, reached the #1 spot on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and Hot R&B charts. The band is known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and flashy wardrobe. They have sold tens of millions of albums and are one of the most successful groups in music history. The song was written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White of The Miracles, another super Mowtown group. "My Girl" has appeared in many movies, and various TV episodes. It is among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, and The Temptations are ranked high on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of all time.
