Holly Holy - Neil Diamond 1969
"Holly Holy" was written and recorded by Neil Diamond with instrumental backing by the Los Angeles session musicians from The Wrecking Crew and supporting vocals of a Gospel choir in 1969. It reached the #6 spot on the U.S. pop singles chart and #5 on the Easy Listening chart. It became a gold record and eventually attained platinum status. A song with a spiritual focus, it was influenced by gospel music and was Diamond's favorite of the songs he had written to that point. In a BBC interview, he said he tried to create a religious experience between a man and a woman, however, Diamond believes that words are subject to interpretation by the listener. This is a song where the music says more than words ever could and that it’s really not an intellectual experience, but an emotional one that happens deep in your heart.
