Round and Round - Ratt - Drum Cover by Keith B.

This one is not only a rare first take, but it is actually a pre-first take, as I did this recording to test if I was happy with my mix/settings (for each cover I do, I adjust the relative volume of the various drums/cymbals to better align with the drum mix on the recording). I usually stop playing on these mix test recordings partly into the song, but since I noticed I hadn’t yet messed up too bad, I just kept going. Listening back there are a few parts I suspect would have gotten better/crisper if I did more takes, but I figured it’s good now and again to showcase things in their “raw” form. This is one of my favorite songs from the hair band era, and the music video featuring comic legend Milton Berle (who was the band’s manager’s uncle) is iconic. The drum part by Bobby Blotzer is excellent, with lots of subtle and creative elements throughout, especially the kick part during the final verse (which is one of the parts of my cover that could have been a bit crisper, IMO). The song was a big hit, reaching #12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1984, and the video was in very heavy rotation on MTV.
