In my opinion, the drum part during the intro to this song is one of the coolest ever. Every note the late, great Clive Burr plays is just perfect. As a result, it’s one of those songs I should have covered years ago, but for some reason just never got to. During the intro I did make one compromise which was to use my double kick pedal for the two 4-beat kick passages. I could (barely) play them with one foot, but it always sounded weak and at times dragged. Looking past the intro, the drums are relatively straight forward, but the tempo is just fast enough to make it a challenging song for me to play. It’s such a shame Burr had to leave the band so early, as while Nicko McBrain is awesome, I always have had a soft spot for Clive and his ultra-precise style. Finally, “The Prisoner” is simply an excellent early Iron Maiden song that does everything an Iron Maiden song should do.
