I'm Eighteen - Alice Cooper - Drum Cover by Keith B.

Alice Cooper is arguably my favorite musical artist, especially when Alice Cooper was a band, i.e. before becoming a solo act (which was still great). “I’m Eighteen” is the band’s first hit single, and it was off their breakthrough album “Love It To Death”. Reportedly when scouting the band, producer Bob Ezrin had heard the band perform “I’m Eighteen” live back when it was ten-minutes long, and later told the band he thought they had something in the song “Edgy”. After getting the title right and helping the band trim it back to a radio friendly three’ish minutes, the rest is history. Neal Smith’s drum part is nothing profound, but he has a unique way of playing, and put a feel to the song that really helped make it work. To me the song strikes an interesting balance in being somewhat laid back, yet also intense, all at the same time. And the punchline “and I like it” highlights Alice’s lyrical creatively that was later on display so often throughout his very long career. There’s a fast, cool fill going into the second verse (that is totally buried in the original recording’s mix, but is there if you listen really closely) that I tried to replicate that actually sounds odd to me being so audible in my mix. A fun one.
