What Really Motivates Us? | Different Ways of Seeing the World | Book Of The Week #2

What motivates us? That's a question I've asked myself many times, and in this book of the week, I bring you one of my favorite books for understanding the motivation and how people can see the world in entirely different ways.

Key Points:

Motivation, as we think of it right now, comes down to approaching pleasure and avoiding pain to some degree.

However, however in this book the authors reveal two very different ways that some of us perceive what pleasure is and what is the pain.

And they hypothesize that we can approach pleasure and avoid pain in a promotion way or in a prevention way.

When someone is in a promotion mindset The pleasure comes from making progress, accomplishing things and moving forward. The pain comes from failing to advance when we stay the same.

Being prevention focus dominant is very different. With this mindset, our primary concern is safety, predictability, and security. Maintaining the status quo gives pleasure. And the goal is to keep doing what you're doing because it's working fine. The pain, in this case, comes from making mistakes and from losing the feeling of safety.

As you can see, these are two entirely different ways of viewing the world.

A great article the two authors wrote about is titled "Do You Play to Win—or to Not Lose?" which you can read at https://hbr.org/2013/03/do-you-play-to-win-or-to-not-lose

The whole idea of having a dominant focus and using the type of motivation that fits your mindset is quite fascinating.

However, we have to remember that what motivates us is domain specific.

In particular life situations, we can be more prevention focused.

One example would be health and family. Most people are prevention focus. We would rather play it safe.

However, with career and work, a lot of us are promotion focused. We get very excited at the thought of making progress and advancing.

It's important also to understand that there's a blend of both happening at the same time.

And there're no reasons not to use both to motivate yourself to take action.

Knowing that there are such definitions and types of motivation if very useful when it comes to motivating others to act.

For example: If you have a friend who is prevention focused when it comes to their health and exercise trying to convince them to exercise because of all the great potential benefits probably won't work.

On the other hand, explaining how they might lose their current "health" and feeling well if they don't exercise might work better.

Similarly, for self-motivation, it might be beneficial to think of why you're doing things from both of these angles.

What are you running away from, and also what are you running towards.

Also asking yourself what's cost if you don't live a healthy lifestyle.

These are good questions and can help us become more disciplined and motivated on the fitness journey.

Overall, this is a fantastic book to read; it inspires a lot of high-level thinking, and I highly recommend reading the whole book or listening to the audio version.

Don't forget to post in the comments below how you resonate with the idea presented in the video.

Cheers!
