How long does it take to form a new habit?

If we look at the research building a new habit can take anywhere from 4 days to a year as it depends on a very large amount of factors.

As well as, some individuals will build habits faster than others.

One part of being successful is the ability to change and form new habits.

In a nutshell, you want to have the ability to replace the automatic behaviors that lead to "failure" to automate those behaviors that will help you reach your goals.

But how do change a habit faster? Do you really need to a whole year?

Truth is, there's certain things you can do to speed up the habit formation process.

Don't get me wrong, complex habits such as meditation, regular exercise, healthy food choices will still take more time to develop than flossing but you can make these desirables behaviors automatic much faster.

What's the secret?

Habits are formed by emotions, not logic.

As a logical guy, this was very hard for me to grasp when I first realized it.

I always thought it was just about the repetition, and doing as many reps as possible.

While reps certainly do help and there's a place for more reps the real "amplifier" for forming habits are positive emotions.

Each habit can be broken down to 3 parts:

1 - Trigger
2 - Action
3 - Reward

In the step 3 lies the secret to strengthen the habit.

Habits that come automatic very fast are those that give us the most positive. The ones that we celebrate the most.

The issue with a lot of healthy habits is that we don't celebrate them. Especially if you're a more logical guy like myself.

i.e. You hit a PR on your Squat and now instead of celebrating you're thinking about what the next weight is gonna be.

You feel great about your diet and instead of celebrating the steps in the process now you're thinking about what you can improve.

It's always about improvement, always about the next 1% you can do better.

This kind of thinking prevents us from cultivating habits such as meditation, which have a more vague reward.

And if we can master the power of celebration, and becoming more in-tune with the positive emotion from doing the action we will greatly speed up the process of turning that into an automatic behavior.

Celebrating is the missing piece that will change you life.

It will give you the ability to build habits within days, and you'll be happier as a person.

You'll look forward to doing the habit, it's not gonna feel like you're doing it just for the reps.

It's going to become something you'll enjoy, and as you get better you'll want to demonstrate how good you are to yourself and to others.

This is what will further re-enforce the habit and make it a part of who you are.
