This was an unusual recording in a variety of ways beginning with the fact that despite the seemingly exhaustive approach in getting it right, none of what was captured in the recording studio was used in the movie!
What’s She Really Like was recorded over two days, 27 and 28 April 1960 at RCA’s Hollywood Studios during the soundtrack session for G.I. Blues. After recording six takes on 27 April, the process was postponed and they all moved onto the next song. The following day, continuing with the take numbers where they left off, recording up to take nineteen. This all included a change in both style and tempo but still no satisfactory master had been achieved.
Following take nineteen, a decision was made to just concentrate on the last minute or so of the song with a view of inserting this onto the end of completed take nineteen. This insert recording process was completed in three takes and the final take was used thus creating a spliced master.
What is very noticeable about the creation of this particular song is how focused and in charge Elvis is, but still allowing for a degree of light heartedness and good natured banter. However, despite how gruelling it might have been, the professionalism of all involved it plain for all to see.
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
