Elvis Presley - Polk Salad Annie - The Houston Astrodome - 3 March 1974 Afternoon Show

Elvis never recorded a studio master of Polk Salad Annie but it became a staple of his live show, often being a showstopper especially in 1970. However, have you ever wondered what an undubbed master may have sounded like? Well, this is probably about as close as we will ever get.
Elvis’ two shows in The Houston Astrodome are probably two of the uniquest show that Elvis ever performed. In Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe he was backed by a full orchestra but due to constraints of one night stand touring, the orchestra was vastly reduced on tour dates, in essence there was no string section.
For these two shows however, there was no room on the very small stage for Joe Guercio and his orchestra meaning that Elvis was only accompanied by The TCB Band and the backing vocalists. This gave that show a unique feel and saw the band work just that bit harder in order to fill gaps that would normally have been filled by the orchestra. The result was often superb such as this rocking version of Polk Salad Annie.
RCA/Sony do have soundboard recordings of both these shows in the vaults but whilst neither have been released officially, the Afternoon Show has been on the bootleg circuit for a few years now. One can only hope that an official release of the evening show will be made available in the not too distant future.
It should be added that a studio rehearsal versions of the song were recorded in July 1970 but these are more light hearted than a live rendition
