Duchess Delivers on the Duchy. 46233 Duchess of Sutherland, The Royal Duchy 7th Aug. 2016.

A rare and unusual visitor to this ‘neck of the woods’, ex LMS Coronation class, 8P, 46233 Duchess of Sutherland hauls the first Royal Duchy of the season. Everything about this loco is impressive, it looks big, sounds big and has gigantic pulling power. I last recorded “The Duchess” on the GWML on 27th October 2001 and I was determined to capture as much as possible of this (one off?) visit, with the emphasis on climbing. With the regular light (safe!) load of nine on the back, Whiteball is shrugged off with minimum regulator. Matford was a convenient location to capture the Torbay Express and The Royal Duchy and get me on to the A38 for the dash to Cornwall, stopping on the way at Wrangaton Summit where I just have time to set up for a grab shot. The climb from St Germans was a “must”, especially as the sun had now burnt through the morning cloud and because of the wind direction we are treated to wonderful sounds as 46233 makes her way onward to Trerulefoot. Another “must” was Hemerdon on the return leg where the crowd on the roadbridge are awestruck by the most amazing sights and sounds as the crew put on a real “show” for passengers and line-siders alike – thank you crew!! Finally another grab shot, this time looking out over Coombe Fishacre as the sun sets over the rolling Devon hills and a splendid day of filming.
