Famous Southern Express Revived for the Day, hauled by 34067 Tangmere.

The Royal Duchy, Sunday 9th September 2012.
The "Devon Belle" headboard returned to the smokebox of a Bulleid light-pacific for this weeks run of RYTC's Royal Duchy tour from Bristol to Par, reminding us of the Southern Railway's attempt to re-introduce luxury travel to the West after WWII. Strictly, only the short stretches of line from Cowley Bridge to Exeter St Davids, and Plymouth North Road to St Budeaux on todays route would have carried the original as the Southern route west of Exeter has long since disappeared. Thankfully authentic Southern power survives in the form Battle of Britain class 34067 Tangmere, indeed this type of locomotive was to haul the last B.R. steam service into Cornwall in May 1964! We start at Stoke Canon where the harvest is now in and 34067 looks fantastic cruising in the morning sun. Next the high speed pass at Exminster, where 75mph looks pretty impressive from track level and the swaying tender alarming!! Speed checks up the Teign Estuary allow us a good side view from across the river, a clip captured during last week's run but inserted here for added interest. Down into Cornwall next for the 1 in 78 climb from St Germans at Treboul, where Tangmere displays a fine "Bulleid wig" head-on. Finally; after a "lucky" black cat dashes across the line, 34067 crests the 1 in 75 climb from Keyham on it's way back to Plymouth North Road in fading light as the days get shorter.
