Dead Boats, Live Steam. 4965 Rood Ashton Hall hauls The Red Dragon.

Vintage Trains Ltd. 7th March 2015
My first film of 2015 takes us to one of the most fascinating locations in the country: the Purton Ships Graveyard, which I have tried to illustrate with images and sounds appropriate to the unique atmosphere and ambience of the place. The site also presents a panoramic view of the whole of the coastal section of the Gloucester to Chepstow and South Wales line, providing visibility is good, which luckily it was on the day! 4965 appears in the distance as it passes Awre, hitting the coastal stretch just as the sun comes out. The remains of the “Dispatch” (built at Speymouth in 1888 and beached in c1961) makes a wonderful frame for the train approaching Gatcombe with the main camera taking over again for a two mile view down the estuary. The return leg is captured at the old junction of the Hereford branch at Grange Court where the low sun sparkles off the immaculate paintwork. Finally, after the sun has set on a wonderful day and her tender replenished at Gloucester we see and hear 4965 lift her load from Barnwood Junction and away under the Pirton Lane road bridge at Churchdown to the screams of excited children.
