60163 Tornado, The Cathedrals Express, 10th March 2012

Originally planned for double-headed Kings, then 60163 + 71000 Duke of Gloucester (still a mouth-watering prospect!) over the Devon Banks, the eventual 60163 + diesel combination after the non-availability of 71000 was a great disappointment all-round, as evidenced by the few spectators lineside on the day. In very flat light 60163 puts on an impressive show lifting 14 coaches to the summit of Whiteball. Regulations unfortunately dictate that a "working" diesel has to sit at the front of the train rather than "bank" from the rear, therefore we have to be grateful that time was given for the diesel to be shuffled in behind Tornado when it was attached at Exeter. I had no intention of filming diesel power over the banks and so I set up at very low water (due to the spring tide) in the Teign estuary at Teign Harvey for some good broadside views of Tornado probably still working on the flat without assistance. Finally, in the last of the daylight and baulked as usual on this stretch of line by a local service, 60163 emerges from Parsons Tunnel, opens the regulator for the run through Dawlish station before backing-off in readiness for a short stop at Dawlish Warren on the homeward leg to Paddington.
