64233 Duchess of Sutherland, The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 18th July 2009

A few days visit to Manchester gave me the opportunity to film a wonderful locomotive, little seen in the Westcountry, at two locations I have always wanted to visit. This was a lucky trip for me as the weather was atrocious in the North the whole time I was there, except in the Shap area on Saturday! The first location is above Shap Wells, some distance from the line where the Duchess can be seen comfortably pulling 13 coaches from below Scout Green all the way to the woods just below the summit. Spare a thought for the many photographers down at Scout Green, where I originally planned to go, who were caught out by the late running freight passing at the critical moment. Next, the beautiful Lune Gorge, a lovely sunny place to wait for the return leg, where again 46233 does not disappoint as she rushes her train southward to the water stop at Carnforth. Finally a bonus under the wires grabshot just south of Carnforth at Red Bank, arent we lucky not to have these eyesores covering the lines in the Southwest?
