6024 King Edward 1, The Torbay Limited, 17 March 2012

Sadly, the last run of my favourite loco on its current mainline ticket with Pathfinder supplying the final act with The Torbay Limited from Bristol to Kingswear, this time with the added interest of a down run via Westbury and the Berks & Hants, which allowed me to feature 6024 crossing two marshes. Dashing across the Somerset levels at full speed, from high up in the woods near Curry Rivel, we see the King racing past Oath, whistle fully open for the foot crossing. It was tight to get to a location after the Taunton water stop, especially as the traffic was very heavy for some reason, so we chose Starcross for easy nearby parking. We arrived with little time to spare only to find the ferry pier, from where I prefer to shoot, was closed off at the shore and so, with no time to re-locate, we were forced to use the footbridge for a head-on shot with a strong breeze at our backs. After a dull but mercifully dry day the late afternoon sun comes out just in time for a fitting farewell view of a glistening 6024 as it cruises past Powderham Church and crosses the Exminster Marshes, literally seconds later, thick black clouds rolled over, instantly turning sunny day into dull evening! A superb day for all and rounded off for us by watching England demolish Ireland in the Six Nations when we got home! Thanks to all involved with this tour and thank you for the supporters that keep 6024 on the mainline, let's hope that it's not too long before we see her again where she belongs: back on the mainline.
