Megalania (name meaning "Giant Butcher") is a genus of Varanidae that originated during the Pleistocene epoch in what is now Australia. Physically similar to a Komodo dragon, this monitor lizard is the largest terrestrial lizard that has ever lived.

Among the apex predators of its time and region, Megalania preyed on large mammals such as Diprotodon and Procoptodon. This predator had sharp teeth and claws that allowed it to attack and kill its prey. The primary threat to its existence came from others of its kind.

Like the modern-day Komodo dragon, Megalania had a mouthful of bacteria, which would have helped it effectively kill its prey. Despite its large size, Megalania was also very fast on land and in water. Uniquely, it had the ability to camouflage itself and elongate its tongue to capture smaller prey, similar to modern chameleons. Additionally, it could scale surfaces, much like geckos.

Perhaps Megalania's most unique attribute was the ability to squirt blood from its eyes. This substance was used both for defense and offense, as it was somewhat corrosive and able to burn the skin of its victims.
