Pteranodon (name meaning "Toothless Wing"), also commonly known as Pterodactyl (name meaning "Winged Finger"), is a genus of large pterosaur that originated during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now North America, South America, and Europe. Perhaps the world's most famous pterosaur of all, despite not being the largest, its most recognizable feature is a crest projecting off the back of its skull, which it used for display purposes.
Although its diet consists largely of fish, Pteranodon does not have teeth, chewing prey with its beak. These pterosaurs are extremely light and delicate in order to be able to fly. Pteranodon was a coastal animal that roosted offshore, out of reach of predators. Their toothless jaws with a pouch of skin could hold fish, like modern pelicans, and the crest that could have acted as a counterbalance when skimming the water's surface.
