Ceratosaurus (name meaning "Horned Lizard") is a genus of theropod dinosaur that originated during the Middle Jurassic period in what is now North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. This medium-sized, however, relatively dangerous predatory dinosaur is characterized by deep jaws supporting proportionally very long, blade-like teeth, an unusual configuration of hornlets above its eyes, and a prominent, ridge-like blade-shaped horn on its snout. Additionally, an unusual feature of Ceratosaurus was the dermal armor in the middle of its back.

Essentially a more primitive theropod dinosaur with four fingered hands, Ceratosaurus also had longer upper teeth then lower teeth. Despite this, both were sharp in their own right. Rather than hunting in packs, Ceratosaurus hunted in pairs. As such, they were also very nurturing parents and would take on even the larger Allosaurus to protect them. For a time, Ceratosaurus was the apex predator of the world for around 20 million years. However, when Allosaurus first evolved, it overshadowed Ceratosaurus and the two species would be locked in conflict for millions of years to come until the end of the Jurassic period.
