Deinosuchus (name meaning "Terrible Crocodile") is a genus of alligatoroid crocodilian that originated during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now North America. A giant prehistoric relative of alligators dwarfing today’s Saltwater crocodile, Deinosuchus is by far the largest crocodilian that ever lived as well as among the world's most well-known prehistoric animals.
Among the apex predators of its time, rivaled only by Tyrannosaurus rex, Deinosuchus was large enough to hunt dinosaurs, hadrosaurs, ceratopsians, and even sauropods. Deinosuchus inhabited rivers, ponds, and lakes alike as well as coastal shores, enabling them to venture into the ocean to find food.
Possessing a bite force that rivals or exceeds T. rex as well as having more than 50 to 80 sharp teeth in its mouth, Deinosuchus was a formidable predator. Like all modern day crocodilians, Deinosuchus (sometimes living in numbers) would ambush their prey from the water and drown them to death via performing the infamous “death role”.
