Dimetrodon (name meaning "Two Measures of Teeth") is a genus of synapsid that originated during the Early Permian era in what is now North America and Europe. Recognizable for the large fin-like sail on its back, Dimetrodon is one of the most well-known prehistoric animals in the world. By far the largest and apex predator of its time, the only challenge to Dimetrodon came from its own kind, indicating that it was a cannibal.

Despite being often mistake for one, Dimetrodon is not a dinosaur - rather, it is actually what is known as a protomammal or "mammal-like reptile"; more mammalian than reptilian. Therefore, Dimetrodon is a primitive non-mammalian synapsid that lived more than 50 million years before the first dinosaurs evolved.

However, similar to dinosaurs such as Spinosaurs, Dimetrodon possessed a large sailed back. The function of the sail on its back has been disputed for decades. Some say it was for display during courtships with mates or competition with rivals, others say it was to help regulate their body temperature.
