IN THE STEPS OF THE ROMANOVS visits the Romanov original burial site, outside of Ekaterinburg.
In the early hours of 17 July, 1918, an old truck was taking 11 bodies of the prisoners, murdered during the night, at the "the House of Special Purpose" in Ekaterinburg. The bodies had to be moved from the first burial site, due to fear of discovery by the locals, who inadvertantly witnessed the secret operation. The truck was stuck in the mud, and never made it to the second planned burial location; the murderers attempted to burn two of the corpses, unsuccessfully, and the two charred bodies ended up being buried separately, approximately 150 meters from the other nine victims.
The remains of the Romanovs: Nicholas, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana and Anastasia, as well as their four loyal servants and friends (Evgeny Botkin, Alexei Trupp, Ivan Kharitonov and Anna Demidova), spent 75 years buried in the woods outside Ekaterinburg, at a location called "Piglet Meadow". They were discovered in mid-1990s, identified and reburied at a cathedral in St. Petersburg, to be once again exhumed in 2015. The remains of Alexei and Maria, were not found until 2007. Currently all the remains are in the possession of Russian Orthodox Church, but have not been officially recognised by them as those of the imperial family members, despite all the forensic tests.
Exactly 100 years after these horrific murders, on 17 July, 2018, we visited the Romanov Memorial at Piglet Meadow. Instead of flowers, I decided to plant a tree at the burial site of the two imperial siblings. I chose a walnut tree due to its hearty nature, to ensure that it survives the harsh Ural winters, until it establishes permanent roots. I have been regularly updated about the tree by the locals: and happy to report that it has survived 3 winters now, and is thriving.
On this anniversary of their murders, I invite you to visit Piglet Meadow with us, to pay your respects to the victims of the Ipatiev house murders, 103 years ago.
