Last peacetime Easter: 6 April, 1914. Tsar Nicholas II exchanging Easter greetings.
Orthodox Easter, the biggest holiday of the year, is celebrated today: Sunday, 2 May, 2021. In 1914, was the last peacetime Easter celebration in imperial Russia. This archival footage from 6 April, 1914, was colourised by Kirill Mityugin, the diary entries were translated by George Hawkins.
From the diary of Nicholas II:
April 6th. Bright Resurrection of Christ.
After Matins, I exchanged Paschal greetings with everyone in the church. The liturgy ended at a quarter to two; we went and broke the Fast in the dining room. ... In the morning... at 11½ o'clock, Paschal greetings began downstairs - 512 people. We had luncheon with everyone... I walked with the children and officers to the Krestovaya Mountain in Orianda, where we sat and rested, admiring the view. We drank tea with delicious paskha, milk and butter....
From the diary of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna:
The Bright Resurrection of Christ April 6
At 11 o'clock and continuing after there was Paschal greetings downstairs and Mama was distributing eggs. We exchanged Easter greetings with... the Cossacks and with the ladies at the house, and Papa gave out eggs. We sat by the cross, smoked after fasting, and watched as the soldiers danced to the accordion below at the barracks....
From the diary of Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna:
Liturgy after Matins. Cossacks. Consolidated regiment. Yuzik was there. Bagration, exchanged Paschal greetings with him. After that everyone broke the fast. At 3 o'clock we went to bed. We got up at 9 o'clock, at 11 o'clock Papa had Paschal Greetings with the Livadia officials downstairs. ... In the afternoon, we 4 walked with Papa, Anya, Nik.Pav., Kublitsky and Babitsyn (exchanged Easter greetings with them). We went to the Krestovaya mountain.... Exchanged Paschal Greetings during the afternoon with the Cossacks and soldiers...
