Unpublished letter from Grand Duchesses Tatiana and Olga to Margarita "Rita" Khitrovo. December 1917
This letter has never been translated or published before (as far as I know). The original is kept at Hoover Institution in California. It was kindly shared with me by Jordanville Monastery librarian, Michael Perekhvostov.
"Tobolsk, 10 December, 1917.
Rita, my dear, I have not written you in a while, and you [haven't] either. Thank Mikh. Nik. for the wishes on the 6th. We went to obednya today, in the afternoon [we] took a walk. It is overcast, but not very cold. These past few days have been freezing, during the night it got down to -24. It was windy, which is not very pleasant. It burns one's face. - But at least the sun felt wonderful the entire time. Nevertheless, we go outside every day, twice. We live as usual. No news at all. Occasionally we get letters from Ts.[arskoe]. Our [illeg] is in the infirmary again- although I do not know what's wrong with him. The Baron is there too. - Does he ever write you? Are there a lot of people you know in Odessa? How do you spend your day, what do you do? Did your hair grow? Ours is growing nicely, just about able to part it, but it doesn't always stay unless we wet it thoroughly. - But it is so very convenient to wear it that way. - One washes hair as much as one wants, but there is no need to comb it. - And what about Dolly, does she already wear a hairdo or not yet? I forgot, how old is she now? Although I think she is younger than Anastasia? Lili lived at Zinochka's or at some hotel - did she come with her son or alone? Forgive me, Rita darling, for so many questions, but when you don't see someone for a long time, you don't know a lot, so everything is interesting- is it not? - We work a lot, embroider, knit, etc. After all, we need to give some kind of gifts to all our people for Christmas.
Write directly to us, as the comis[sar] reads them all anyway. -
Well, that's all. I wish you, dear Rita, all the best, to spend the Christmas holidays nicely and merrily. I kiss you, and everyone, very very affectionately
Regards to N.N. and N.D. -
Tatiana
