LET'S GO TO TSARSKOE SELO!
In 1912, the Russian poet Osip Mandelshtam wrote these verses about a beloved town - Tsarskoe Selo. These lines still bring us back to the time long gone, but imprinted in every street and building, which remains from that bygone era. This week, let's take a trip back in history - let's go to Tsarskoe Selo!
LET'S GO TO TSARSKOE SELO
We're free, we're loose and drunken
The Uhlans smiling there,
Leaping into sturdy saddles ...
Let's go to Tsarskoe Selo!
The barracks, parks and palaces
With shreds of cotton wool on trees
And sound of "greetings" rolls
The cry of "great, well done!"
The barracks, parks and palaces ...
One-story houses,
Where single minded generals
Will while away their tired lives,
Reading "Niva" and Dumas-
In mansions - not homes!
The whistle of a steam train ...
A prince arriving.
His suite in glass pavilion! ..
And, dragging his saber in anger,
An officer comes out, boasting, -
I have no doubt - this is the prince ...
He is returning home -
Naturally, the kingdom of etiquette,
Inspiring secret fear, the carriage
With relics of gray-haired lady of the court,
Which are returning home ...
~ Osip Mandelshtam~
