Two of them are a mainstay of the Italian lifestyle, whilst one was loved by a legendary lothario, and the other dates back as far as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and the Roman empire.
So, are you ready for more culinary delights to sample from Italy?
Here are those next four Italian foods to love, that have aphrodisiac qualities:
#20. Olives.
Olives have been a staple diet of both Italy, and the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times.
As aphrodisiacs, green olives supposedly increase a man’s virility, whilst black olives arouse a woman’s sexual passions.
#21. Olive Oil.
Such is the versatility of olive oil throughout life in Italy, there’s not much to say other than it's full of antioxidants that are good for a healthy heart, good blood flow and regulated hormone levels.
The stress hormone, cortisol, can be bad news if you’re planning a romantic evening, so make sure that olive oil is part of the ingredients.
Not only does it help reduce cortisol, but it also increases testosterone.
One old custom followed by the Greeks and Italians is for newly married couples to dip bread in olive oil to help with conception.
Olive oil is such a versatile ingredient.
#22. Oysters.
This is another one of those foods where the visual aspects automatically classify it as an aphrodisiac.
Add the fact (or could it be fiction?), that Casanova devoured oysters to boost his reputation with the ladies, and you can see why the humble oyster is still considered an aphrodisiac.
There are two scientific reasons that back up the claim of the oyster’s capabilities:
(1) It contains D-Aspartic acid, which increases testosterone levels in men and oestrogen levels in women; and
(2) They contain high levels of zinc, crucial for the male reproductive system.
#23. Pine Nuts.
Pine nuts have been around since ancient Rome, when Roman soldiers ate them as they marched into battle.
At Pompeii, archaeologist’s discovered piles of pine nuts preserved in volcanic ash, and are thought to have been used in creating mustards and sausages.
As an aphrodisiac, pine nuts supposedly stimulate a man’s vigour, and because they're rich in zinc, and are important for improving fertility, then there’s science to help back up that claim.
Today in Italy, pine nuts are used as a main ingredient in pesto, and as an ingredient in sauces, and in fish and meat dishes, especially in Neapolitan and Sicilian food.
