Driving in Italy Post-Brexit - Pt.8

For UK expats in Italy, driving after Brexit is likely to result in some changes to the licences and permits required if you’re still driving with a UK licence.

To avoid any mis-haps there are 3 key areas to understand to continue driving legally in Italy.

.... and the 3 key areas to understand are:

#1. Driving in Italy.

If you're resident in Italy, exchange your UK licence for an Italian one before Brexit.

You can still use your Italian driving licence in the UK for short visits, or exchange it for a UK licence without taking a test, if you return to live in the UK.

For information on driving in Italy, IF YOU'RE A UK resident, you'll want to read the guidance on:

(1) What you need to drive abroad, at: https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad

(2) Driving licence exchange and renewals, at: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/driving-licence/driving-licence-renewal-exchange/italy/index_en.htm

and (3) Contacting an Ufficio Motorizzazione Civile office, at: https://www.ilportaledellautomobilista.it/gms/ricerca/-1/Visualizza

#2. Bringing a UK-Registered Vehicle to Italy.

To read the guidance on taking a vehicle out of the UK, check out the following: https://www.gov.uk/taking-vehicles-out-of-uk

If you move to Italy with your UK-registered car, you must register your car with Italian licence plates within 60 days of being officially resident in Italy.

For more information, contact the Ufficio Motorizzazione Civile.

Again, details can be found at: https://www.ilportaledellautomobilista.it/web/portale-automobilista/veicoli/autoveicoli

You can read the EU’s guidance on car registration and taxes in Italy, by checking out the URL here: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/registration/registration-abroad/index_en.htm

#3. Driving After Brexit.

(1) If there's A DEAL, driving licence rules will stay the same during the implementation period, which is currently up to the end of December 2020.

(2) If there’s NO DEAL, UK driving licences will likely be considered as third country national licences.

To continue using your licence, you may need to re-take your driving test, including passing a theory test in Italian.

One aspect of driving to Italy, irrespective of whether there’s a deal or no deal, is that you'll need your UK driving licence to drive in an EU or EEA country.

As a consequence, you may need one or more international driving permits (IDPs), depending on which country you’re going to... or THROUGH.

For further guidance on driving in, and through, the EU to Italy after Brexit, check out the URL link here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/driving-in-the-eu-after-brexit-international-driving-permits
