So, to really enjoy your wine, you want to pair it with the food of the region.
As the saying goes: “What grows together, goes together!”
So, check out the types of bars and food to sample, and the local wines, of course, throughout Italy's best 20 wine regions to visit, and then ask yourself: "Which wine region shall I begin my journey from?"
It goes without saying that food and drink play an important part in the daily lives of Italians.
There are many types of places where you can eat and enjoy your wine in Italy, and here are 12 to get familiar with:
(1) Birreria – a bar that provides beer and other alcoholic beverages.
(2) L’Enoteca – a wine bar. Enough said!
(3) Locanda and/or La Taverna– an inn.
(4) Caffé – a café serving coffee, drinks and snacks.
(5) Paninoteca – a sandwich shop.
(6) Pizzeria – a pizza restaurant.
(7) Polentaria - a polenta restaurant found in northern Italy.
(8) Spaghetteria – a spaghetti restaurant.
(9) Trattoria – a family-run restaurant.
(10) Tavola Calda – best described as a carvery, where you help yourself to local dishes served to you on a hot tray.
(11) Osteria – a rustic-style restaurant, serving local cuisine.
(12) Agriturísmó – a working farm that offers hearty, local meals.
There again, you will often come across many establishments that just refer to themselves as a ristorante - a restaurant.
Here’s how a typical Italian dining experience follows:
(1) An aperitivo.
This is the start of the meal.
It's usually a pre-dinner drink (an aperitif), such as a Spumante or Prosecco or a sparkling rosé wine served with olives or garlic bread, for example.
(2) Antipasti.
This is what you would refer to as a starter, which could be a small cold or cured meat dish or a cheese dish (such as Gorgonzola), for example.
For a meat or salty fish dish or selection, choose a white wine such as Pinot Grigio or a red wine from a selection of Barbera, Chianti, Montepulciano, or a Bardolino.
(3) A primo.
This is the first course, and usually includes pasta or risotto or polenta.
It is optional to choose wine with this dish, but if you do, a light white glass of local wine is appropriate.
(4) The sécondí.
This is the second course (the main course).
It's usually made up of fish and meat dishes, and served with vegetables (often referred to as the contorno - the side dish), or salad (known as insalata).
When it comes to wines for the main course, go with the suggestions in the following videos, depending on the region that you find yourself in.
(5) Afters or dessert is usually a selection of cheese and fruits (formaggio e frútta) and cakes (dolce).
Wine is a sweet dessert wine, often referred to as vín santo, and is usually a white Trebbiano or Malvasia.
(6) Finally, coffee (caffé) and liqueurs (dígestivo) are often offered after the meal, sometimes referred to collectively as ammazzacaffé.
