The coastline extends to 340km from the French border down to Tuscany.

France, Tuscany, Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna border Liguria.

5. The Italian Riviera.

The Italian Riviera runs from the French border in the north, to Tuscany at its southern end, with the western half called La Riviera di Ponente, and the eastern half called the Riviera di Levante.

Sanremo is the most famous town along this stretch of the coast.

Since 1954, this bronze statue sits in about 20 metres of seawater, off the coast of San Fruttuoso, near Portofino.

Famous for its pesto sauce, with basil and pine nuts as its ingredients, the use of tomatoes, garlic and olive oil makes the region a showcase for typical Italian cuisine.

Various wines of the region are the red Ormeasco and Rossese, and the white Vermentino and Pigato.
