The Region of Emilia-Romagna

So, the Emila-Romagna region of Italy.

#1. Where Is It?

It is in the north of Italy, and it borders the regions of:

(1) Lombardy and Veneto to the north;
(2) Liguria and Piedmont to the west; and
(3) Tuscany and Le Marché to the south.

On its east side is the Adriatic Sea.

#2. There are 9 Provinces of the Region:

(1) Bologna;
(2) Ferrara;
(3) Forli Cesena;
(4) Modena;
(5) Parma;
(6) Piacenza;
(7) Ravenna;
(8) Reggio Emilia; and
(9) Rimini.

#3. The Geography:

The northern part of the region is dominated by the River Po and its plains.

To the south-west are the Apennine mountains.

The region spans an area of over 8,500 sq. miles.

#4. Inhabitants:

It has a population of nearly 5 million.

#5. Where Does the Name Emilia-Romagna Come From?

There’s two parts to this answer:

(1) Emilia is named after Via Aemilia, the Roman-built road that runs from Piacenza down to Rimini on the coast.

(2) Romagna is derived from the name of the Eastern Roman Empire called Romania, which subsequently became the province of Ravenna.

The two areas combined to become Emilia-Romagna in 1948.

#6. The Arts.

The region has been blessed by the works of Verdi, the poetry of Giovanni Pascoli, and the film director Fellini.

#7. Third Largest Economy in Italy.

Agriculture, manufacturing and tourism are the three main economic drivers of the region.

#8. Bologna is the Capital of the Region.

It is a vital transport and communications hub for Italy.

#9. Five Other Main Cities and Towns of the Region:

(1) Ravenna:

This used to be the capital of the Roman Empire.

(2) Ferrara:

Ferrara is known for the festivals it holds.

(3) Modena:

Modena produces the world's finest balsamic vinegar, and is also the home of Italian luxury sports cars and motor racing.

(4) Parma:

Parma is famous for its ham and parmigiano cheese.

(5) Rimini.

Rimini is known for its long sandy beaches and summer nightlife.

#10. San Marino is on the edge of the Emilia-Romagna region.

It is the third-smallest country in Europe.

#11. Max Mara – Italian Fashion in Emilia Romagna:

Achille Maramotti built up his Italian fashion business, Max Mara, from 1951 in Reggio Emilia.

#12. The Via Emilia:

An ancient Roman-built road that runs from Piacenza in the north-west to Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

#13. The Food and Wines of Emilia-Romagna:

Emilia-Romagna is at the heart of Italian cuisine, including:

(1) balsamic vinegar;
(2) Parmigiano Reggiano cheese;
(3) prosciutto ham;
(4) pasta, such as lasagne, tagliatelle and tortellini;
(5) piadina, which is a flatbread made from lard, salt, wheat flour and water;
(6) an abundance of fish, olives, salami, meats, fruits and vegetables, including pumpkins, and wheat;
(7) Lambrusco, the slightly sparkling red wine, and other reds including Barbera and Sangiovese, whilst Malvasia is the best known of the white wines.
