This is the first of a three-part series, setting out the likely practical implications for:

(1) UK expats living in Italy; and

(2) Britons travelling to, working and living in Italy, if Brexit does actually take place on 31st October, 2019.

There’s a lot of hysteria building up as the UK lurches nearer to the Brexit door on 31st October.

The national and international media are quick to jump on the perceived negatives of the UK leaving the EU, as that's what sells newspapers and viewing times.

For expats already living in Italy, as it is in any other EU country, the uncertainty understandably causes people to worry about their future.

They're literally consigned to a “should I stay or should I go” scenario.

1. The Current Benefits of Living in Italy.

A couple of examples include:

(1) UK citizens get the benefits of reciprocal healthcare in Italy, and

(2) the ability of free movement, which means being able to visit the country for up to three months without applying for a visa.

2. What Could Happen After Brexit?

The doom and gloom merchants could have you believe that you'll lose all medical and health benefits if the UK leaves the EU.

However, there are a large number of Italians living in the UK who also benefit under the same reciprocal arrangements.

Such arrangements are part of many agreements that the UK is seeking to maintain in a post-Brexit world.

It makes sense, therefore, that as these arrangements have been in place for a number of years, and the processes and systems have been established and work reasonably efficiently, then why shouldn’t these arrangements remain in place?

Why go through all the expense and hassle of dismantling something that works for both countries, and then spending millions of pounds and euros to construct something different?

3. For UK Citizens Wanting to Live in Italy After Brexit.

This should be a fairly simple situation to comprehend and accept - UK citizens should be treated in the same manner as US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and any other nation's citizens.

Currently, UK, US and Australian citizens don’t need a visa to enter Italy.

So, as the US and Australia aren’t part of the EU anyway, why should matters change for UK citizens in this respect?

The last time I checked on the internet there were about 30,000 Australians living in Italy (via Wikipedia 2002), but I can’t imagine that number is much different today.

A similar number applies to Britons living in Italy, according to a January 2017 Office for National Statistics article – the URL link is here:

For the US, the number according to Wikipedia is about 50,000.
