Why You Can Do More Dumbbell Curls With A Supinated Forearm Than A Pronated Forearm

Recently a subscriber inquired to me as to why he could do more dumbbell curls with his palms up than down. There is a rather simple explanation to this and it involves your Brachialis muscle, as well as your Biceps Brachii muscle.

Your Biceps Brachii not only flex your elbow, but also make you go into a supinated forearm position. This in fact is their strongest action. When your palms are pointed down, your Biceps aren't active now. When you have a pronated forearm and flex your elbow, now your Brachialis muscle is doing most of the work. When you are in a supinated forearm position, however, now your Biceps and Brachialis muscles are working together to do dumbbell curls.

This is why it is easier to curl with your palms up rather than down.
