Knee Pain When Running: Why It Happens
Many people seem to have the idea that knee pain when running is coming directly from the knee itself. In reality, this is rarely the case. The vast majority of the time, knee pain is coming from either the foot or the hip. Because the knee is sandwiched between those 2 structures, it will be affected if something is happening to either of those areas.
Up at the knee, a muscle called the Gluteus Medius is responsible for performing hip abduction and controlling the opposite action, hip adduction. When your foot hits the ground while running, a strong Gluteus Medius should keep your leg relatively aligned. If this muscle is weak, however, your thigh can go inwards and you can go into a position of valgus collapse. Another word for valgus is knock knees, where your knees go inwards. This position places excessive stress on them and will lead to pain over time. By strengthening your Gluteus Medius, you can help to alleviate knee pain when running.
Foot issues can also cause knee pain from running. Flat feet, for example, can cause your shin bone to come inwards when your foot hits the ground. This too will cause your knee to go into valgus collapse and lead to pain over time. High arched feet can also cause knee issues due to decreased shock absorption.
Essentially, by correcting issues going on at your hip or knee, this will help to alleviate knee pain when running.
