1 Speech Nearly Got Patton Fired Weeks Before D-Day

In April 1944, weeks before the Normandy invasion, General Patton gave a speech at a private social club event in Knutsford, England, in which he made undiplomatic remarks suggesting that Britain and America were destined to rule the postwar world together, comments quickly leaked to the press and interpreted as dismissive of other Allied nations, including the Soviet Union. The resulting controversy caused serious concern at the highest levels of Allied command, and Eisenhower seriously considered removing Patton from his command just weeks before D-Day over the incident. Patton was ultimately kept in his position, largely because Eisenhower judged his value as a decoy figure and battlefield commander outweighed the political damage.
