In 1943, Polish soldiers in Iran found a bear cub abandoned in the mountains. They bought him and named him Wojtek. He traveled with the 22nd Artillery Supply Company through Iraq, Palestine, and Egypt. He watched soldiers carry ammunition boxes. Then he started copying them. During the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944 — one of WW2's bloodiest fights — Wojtek carried 100-pound artillery shells alongside his unit, back and forth, under enemy fire, without dropping a single one. He was officially enlisted as a private. Promoted to corporal after the battle. He lived in Edinburgh Zoo after the war and recognized his old soldiers when they visited until he died in 1963.
