1 Battleship Still Leaks Oil 80 Years Later. 1,177 Men Are Still Entombed Inside

During the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the battleship USS Arizona was struck by a bomb that detonated its forward ammunition magazine, causing a massive explosion that sank the ship in minutes and killed one thousand one hundred seventy-seven of its crew, roughly half of all American deaths that day. Because recovering the remains was largely impossible, most of the sailors killed remain entombed within the sunken hull, which still rests on the harbor floor beneath a memorial built across it. More than eighty years later, the wreck continues to slowly release small amounts of oil to the surface, a phenomenon visitors have come to call the ship's black tears.
