Summer 1941. A Politburo meeting. Marshal Georgy Zhukov presented his assessment of the situation on the Eastern Front to Stalin — including the recommendation that Kiev should be evacuated and Soviet forces withdrawn to avoid encirclement. Stalin's vision of Soviet cities as symbols of national resistance meant abandoning them was politically intolerable. He publicly humiliated Zhukov in front of the assembled Soviet high command. Zhukov was removed as Chief of the General Staff immediately after the meeting. Six weeks later, Germany surrounded and destroyed the Soviet forces around Kiev — capturing 665,000 soldiers in the largest encirclement in military history. It was exactly what Zhukov had predicted. Stalin quietly recalled him to active command. Zhukov never said "I told you so" in any document that survived.
