1 Division Was Surrounded In The Coldest Winter In Memory With No Winter Gear

In December 1944, elements of the 101st Airborne Division were rushed to defend the town of Bastogne, Belgium, as German forces launched a massive surprise offensive through the Ardennes forest, quickly surrounding the American defenders. Many of the troops arrived without adequate winter clothing, boots, or ammunition, having been pulled hastily from rest positions, and they faced one of the coldest winters the region had experienced in years while completely cut off from resupply. Despite freezing conditions, heavy casualties, and a formal German demand to surrender, the defenders held the town until Patton's Third Army broke through to relieve them on December 26th.
