1 Bomber Crew Became The First Famous Crew To Survive 25 Missions Over Germany

By May 1943, the crew of the B-17 bomber Memphis Belle had completed twenty-five combat missions over occupied Europe, a milestone Army Air Forces planners had originally set as an unlikely target given the extremely high loss rates bomber crews faced at the time. The crew became one of the first, and by far the most famous, to reach that number and return home rather than continuing to fly. Rather than simply rotating out quietly, they were sent on a US war bond tour, and their story was captured in a widely seen 1944 documentary film that introduced much of the American public to the reality of the air war over Germany.
