Ahead of the American invasion of Iwo Jima in 1945, Japanese commander Tadamichi Kuribayashi ordered his forces to construct an extensive network of underground tunnels and fortified bunkers across the small volcanic island, reportedly totaling more than eleven miles of connected passages. This allowed Japanese defenders to move undetected between positions, emerge from hidden entrances behind advancing American troops, and reoccupy areas that had already been declared cleared. The tactic significantly extended the battle's length and casualty count, turning what planners had expected to be a relatively short operation into one of the costliest battles fought by American forces in the entire Pacific War.
