The Persian King Who Declared War on the Ocean — and Won
In 480 BC, Xerxes built two pontoon bridges across the Hellespont to move his army into Greece. A storm destroyed both bridges overnight. Xerxes ordered the sea whipped — 300 lashes delivered to the water. He also had his engineers beheaded. Then he ordered new bridges built, using a completely different cable system: flax and papyrus ropes stretched between 674 ships anchored in parallel rows. It worked. His army of roughly 200,000 crossed in seven days. The second bridges held. Xerxes had literally punished the ocean, replaced the engineers who failed, and solved the problem anyway. The campaign ultimately failed — but the crossing succeeded completely.
