1 Officer Led The Final Charge That Turned Tarawa — Wounded Twice Before He Fell

During the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943, First Lieutenant Alexander Bonnyman Jr. led a small group of engineers in an assault on a heavily fortified Japanese bunker complex that had pinned down American forces for most of the battle. Using explosives and covering fire, his team fought their way onto the bunker itself, and Bonnyman personally led the final charge that broke Japanese resistance there, an action credited with turning the tide of the battle. He was wounded multiple times during the fighting and was killed just as the position was finally secured. He received the Medal of Honor posthumously.
