The Admiral Who Warned His Own Country It Couldn't Win The War It Started

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who had studied and traveled extensively in the United States before the war, understood American industrial capacity better than many of his peers in the Japanese military and reportedly expressed private reservations about Japan's ability to win a prolonged war against it. He is widely described as having told colleagues that Japan could run wild for perhaps six months to a year after an initial attack, but had little confidence in ultimate victory if the conflict extended beyond that window. Despite these documented doubts, Yamamoto proceeded to plan and lead the attack on Pearl Harbor as ordered by his own government.
