What Zhukov Ordered When Moscow Was About To Fall

During the desperate defense of Moscow in the autumn and winter of 1941, Marshal Georgy Zhukov, placed in overall command of the city's defense as German forces closed to within sight of the capital, enforced extremely strict discipline throughout Soviet lines, treating any unauthorized retreat as a serious offense. His uncompromising approach, combined with reinforcements moved from Siberia and the onset of harsh winter conditions, helped stabilize the front just outside Moscow and ultimately contributed to a major Soviet counteroffensive in December 1941 that pushed German forces back from the capital's outskirts for good.
