1 Soldier Silenced 4 Machine Guns Alone To Save His Platoon. His Medal Took 70 Years

On June 9, 1944, near Amfreville, France, Private Joe Gandara left the cover of his platoon and advanced alone against a series of German machine gun positions threatening to cut off his unit's flank. He fought his way from one position to the next, silencing several machine gun crews before being killed in the effort, and his actions are credited with allowing his platoon to continue its advance safely. Due to the discrimination Hispanic American soldiers often faced at the time, Gandara's heroism went formally unrecognized for decades. It was not until 2014 that a review of overlooked cases finally resulted in Gandara receiving the Medal of Honor, seventy years after his death.
