#1. Geography.

The area of Calabria is over 15,000 square kilometres.

#2. National Parks.

There are three national parks - Aspromonte, Pollino, and Sila;

#3. Where is Calabria Situated?

The southern region of Calabria is the “toe of the boot” of Italy, with the regions of Basilicata to the north, the Ionian Sea to the south, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west.

The region is separated from Sicily by just a few miles of the Strait of Messina.

#4. A Brief History of Calabria.

Calabria’s history goes back to the 8th Century BC, when it was a colony of Greece called Magna Graecia, which is Latin for Great Greece.

It became part of Italy after the 1860 expedition of Giuseppe de Garibaldi.

#5. The Economy.

Calabria is one of Italy's, and Western Europe's, poorest regions....... tourism has been steadily on the rise in the last few decades, subject to recent world-wide health events.

#6. The Provinces of Calabria.

There are five provinces, being:

(1) Catanzaro;
(2) Cosenza;
(3) Crotone;
(4) Reggio di Calabria; and
(5) Vibo Valentia.

#7. The Capital City of Calabria.

The capital city of Calabria is Catanzaro, situated on the coast overlooking the Gulf of Squillace, south-east of Cosenza.

It's known as the “city of two seas”.

#8. The Population.

With a population of 2 million......

#9. The Language.

The primary language of Calabria is the standard Italian language.

#10. Calabria’s Minority Groups.

There are three significant minority groups, as follows:

(1)  The Greeks – they tend to be farming communities living in the mountains, in the province of Reggio di Calabria.

(2)  The Waldensians - these are a French Christian religious group who settled in the mountains in the province of Cosenza in the 12th century.

(3)  The Albanians -  these are the largest ethnic minority in Calabria..... speaking their own language of Arberesh.

#11. Cash is King.

Many shops, bars and cafés still only take cash.

#12. Mountain Ranges.

There are four mountain ranges in Calabria.

(1)  Aspromonte is the most southerly.

(2)  Sila, in central Calabria, is made up of three areas, being:

(a)  Sila Grande is where the region’s most popular ski slopes are situated.

(b)  Sila Greca is where you can find many 15th Century Albanian villages.

(c)   Sila Piccola is made up of dense forests;

(3)  Serra, best known for the famous porcini mushrooms; and

(4)  Pollino, in the northern part of Calabria, home to the Romito Caves and the Mercure Valley.

Calabria has a lot going for it, but it certainly is only for discerning people who cherish a very quiet and get-away-from-it-all lifestyle.
