The JACOBITE steam train | Hogwarts Express | Scotland Adventures

On 24 May 2023 we made a fabulous trip on the Jacobite steam train (otherwise known as the Hogwarts Express as featured in the Harry Potter films) travelling from Fort William to Mallaig on the West Highland Line.

Our family party of 8 went on the Jacobite Steam train to celebrate our niece Jessica’s 30th birthday! Jessica is a huge Harry Potter fan, and Graham a huge steam locomotive fan - so it was the perfect day trip during our week-long stay in Glenfinnan in the Scottish Highlands.

This steam train trip is described as the greatest railway journey in the world! The scenery is absolutely stunning along the entire route. On the 84 mile round trip we travelled from the base of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, alongside beautiful lochs and through forest and craggy moorland, before finally emerging on the wild Atlantic coast and heading up to the small port of Mallaig.

On this route the Jacobite steam train crosses over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (of Harry Potter fame), passes through the most westerly mainland railway station in Britain at Arisaig, steams past the deepest freshwater loch in Britain - Loch Morar, the shortest river - the River Morar, before finally reaching the deepest seawater loch in Europe - Loch Nevis. The final stretch to Mallaig gives passengers superb views to the islands of Rum, Eigg and Skye.

Our return trip was rewarded with further stupendous views, this time looking across Loch Eil to the majestic Ben Nevis mountain range and finally Neptune’s Staircase, a series of impressive locks on the Caledonian Canal on the edge of Fort William.

As there were 8 in our party we took it in turns to travel in either a compartment for six, or two first class seats, which gave us a wonderful all-round experience of this amazing steam train journey through the stunning scenery of the Western Highlands in Inverness Shire. The Jacobite experience has to be one of the most scenic steam train rides in the world!
