Elvis Presley - This Is The Story - From First Take to the Master

“This Is The Story” was the second song, after “Long Black Limousine” recorded by Elvis on the first day of his legendary Memphis 69 recording sessions. The word “legendary” is a vastly overused word in today’s parlance but it completely apt in the context of this recording session. It would see Elvis take a completely different direction, as far as his musical output was concerned, and in the ensuing years the subsequent product has been viewed as among the best of his career.
The song was completed in just two takes on 14 January 1969, but after reflection this second take was deemed unsatisfactory. The decision was taken therefore, to erase Elvis’ vocal and he re-recorded his vocal to the original backing track on 24 January 1969.
Post production began the following day with the recording of the backing vocals before the track was edited down by thirty seconds. This was followed by strings and brass being added on 5 and 6 May respectively creating the RCA master.
This compilation shows the song at all stages of this process apart from the original 14 January master which, as stated above, had Elvis’ original vocal erased.
