With the bench press there is not really any room to move with the shoulder blade, so most of the movement comes from horizontal flexion and extension of the glenohumeral joint, and with heavy load or incorrect shoulder blade posture - this will become a real problem. The position of the shoulder blade is a big factor in shoulder injuries arising from the simple fact that if there is any winging of the scapula and not enough retraction - this will create shearing forces and impingement problems in the shoulder joint, leading to shoulder pain, labral injuries and tendon injuries. It's a great exercise for pectoral muscle growth.... but unfortunately at a large expense of the shoulder joint.
