"Gimme Shelter" was written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger and is the first track off of the Rolling Stones 1969 release...Let It Bleed."Gimme Shelter" was placed at No.38 on Rolling Stone's list...The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.The song has been used in three Martin Scorsese films...Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995) and The Departed (2006).As of 2013,there have been well over 50 different recorded covers of this song.

"Gimme Shelter" is simply a song in the reflection of the time at which it was written.The song was written in 1969 which was a very rough and very violent era.The United States was fresh of off the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Robert Kennedy the year earlier.The backdrop of the Vietnam War was still present and the country had been introduced to a sadistic individual named Charles Manson and experienced his contributions to society.It is events like these that "Gimme Shelter" contained the lines..."Yeah,a storm is threat'ning...My very life today".The songs opening line."War, children, it's just a shot away...It's just a shot away".The song promotes into its powerful middle chorus reminding us what the country was experiencing at that time..."Rape, murder...It's just a shot away"."Gimme Shelter" is loaded with negative lyrics but the ending of the song offers promise as we hear..."I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away".I guess this is Richards and Jaggers real message that is hidden in the song.In 1969,America was witnessing violence,murder,pillage and destruction of a foreign country on television."Gimme Shelter" simply put all of that to music.It is in effect a kind of the end-of-the-world song.Let It Bleed went on to go 2X Platinum (two million copies sold).Shortly after,The Beatles would release their swan song known as...Let It Be.A kind of antidote to the negativity that grew from the Stones release.This version of "Gimme Shelter" can be found on the Rolling Stones 1998 live LP...No Security.
